Date of Birth: December 20, 1999
Canon: The Old Kingdom Series
Species: Witch
Role: Medium/Necromancer
Rank: 3 (Given her talents, it would be of benefit to have her higher ranked?)
Background: Born to a woman of the Clayr line of prophetic witches in Scotland (Arielle) and to a father she never knew (Tirciel), Lirael grew up surrounded by folk who looked nothing like her. Their hair and eyes were light, not black like her own. She was taller than all of them by what felt like miles and nothing really ever fit. As she grew up, she realised not even her aptitude for magic was anything like them. She learned it so easily, all the complex notations, the Latin, everything from runic casting, to more advanced forms of magic came so easily to her. When she was fourteen, well past when most of the Clayr women had gotten their prophetic powers, she was determined to throw herself into the sea. After getting up to the cliff to do just that, she couldn't go through with it. That and they'd gotten a visitor from England. From London.

There was some talk about dead people rising - not in London particularly but she heard enough to know that there was more to the world than her aunt, her cousins, and the plot of land they all lived on. When she questioned them, they gave her hope that she might still see the future and gave her a choice of where she wanted to work until she seventeen or eighteen. There was one place Lirael loved more than anything and it was the great library, which housed an awful lot of magical books and even artefacts. Some of them were even dangerous enough that every librarian had to wear a special knife and they were each given a magic clockwork mouse to sound an alarm if ever they were in danger. While it was nothing to do with the dead, Lirael worked on learning more magic until she was undoubtedly the best she could be without further training.

One night, when she was exploring places she shouldn't have been, she found a fae. It was small, angry, and Lirael nearly killed herself sealing it away behind wards she wasn't quite powerful enough to cast. It took her some time to heal from her ordeal but she wasn't finished with the fae. Bound behind that ward, it was scratching to get out, and when it did? Her family was far from safe. They didn't know what she did, after all.

Lirael researched everything she could on banishing fae, binding them, whatever it took to keep her family safe. Once she was as ready as she could be, and with the help of an enchanted iron sword, Lirael defeated the fae. That, too, nearly cost the girl her life but the Clayr were safe. In time, Lirael put down a few more fae as she returned to her magical studies. By the age of eighteen, she discovered she was a medium as well as a witch, information she found tucked away within a secret passage, all but forgotten.

She could, as she put it, open a door into death but remain living, intact, even if it was bitterly cold. With the help of the Dark Mirror for found with a set of pan pipes, Lirael also found out she could look into the past but only if she opened that door into death. The further back she looked, the further over to the other side she had to go.

It was enough to tell her that she needed to study elsewhere and expand her horizons. Her family, glimpsing trouble on the horizon, agreed.

Lirael needed to go to London, now, and all the Clayr women would say were two words:

Circle Daybreak.

There, Lirael hopes to find answers about her talents, her magic, and exactly what her place in this world really is.

Personality: Lirael is, in a word, morbid. It's to the point where she makes up grandiose fantasies about how she'll throw herself into the sea and how everyone will mourn her passing, etc, etc etc. She has an iron determination, a strong willpower, and the determination to press forward without pause. She's incredibly intelligent, a natural with magic in general but eerily so when it comes to dealing with matters of death, ghosts, and the afterlife. She's still new to it all but she's learning quickly and forever buried in a book, researching, and finding her own path through the rigours of magic.

She is also incredibly stubborn and talking her down from doing something rarely succeeds. Lirael has enough courage to get her through just about anything and the will to see it done. While she might have been scared as a child, her path in life is becoming increasingly clear and with that clarity, she finds herself in a determined race toward her future - even if it means putting the dead to their final rest.

Powers & Possessions:
MAGIC MEMORISATION
Lirael has the ability to call up books she has read with perfect clarity when she needs the spells or information.
METAL PAN PIPES
With these, straddling life and death, Lirael can summon spirits to speak with and release them as well.

THE DARK MIRROR
A portal into the past, activated by an incantation. Lirael is the only one able to use it but she must open a ghost door to do so and thus, open herself to the world of the dead - so to speak.

DEATH SENSE
Lirael knows how long someone has been dead and usually their name after a few moments in the dead's company.

MEDIUMSHIP
Lirael is a medium as well as a witch, something fairly unique to her bloodline. She is able to reach into death via using a spirit/ghost door unique to those who have the Abhorsen bloodline, no matter how diluted it might be.

As long as her body isn't disturbed, she remains tethered to the land of the living, even if she returns to life covered in icicles and frost. This particular mechanic means that Lirael is essentially capable of splitting her spirit from her body as long as she is tied to Life (her living body). Her use of the Dark Mirror for seeing the past puts greater strain on her due to the fact that she must 'walk' or send her spirit back through the years in order to see certain events that have already happened in an accurate manner. For example, say a murder happened 25 years ago and remained unsolved, if Lirael is on the spot where it happened or is holding something from the victim, she will be able to send her spirit back 25 years, tethered to the object or place, in order to accurately witness the event. The application of this particular talent lends itself well to a real world detective career as she is exactly the correct age to enrol in the police academy. Being an extremely gifted witch makes her invaluable to any organisation she joins and being a medium is definitely an advantage.

CLAIRVOYANT (Post-cognitive)
Lirael is able to accurately perceive the past through the use of The Dark Mirror after reciting an incantation. The further into the past she wishes to go, the further through the particular ghost door she opens she must walk - it also means she gets closer to death.

One suitcase containing:
Metal pan pipes
The Dark Mirror
Two blue dresses
Two sets of socks and underthings
One knit vest, red
A pair of sturdy boots
Three old books on post-cognition, the dead, and ghosts
One very old book about the Bright Shiners

Lirael stood with her bag at her side watching the London traffic pass with her dark eyes. Everything she owned was in it, neatly folded, carefully packed. Everything she was fit in one bag but she was not sorry for it. This was an adventure in its own right, something she'd needed away from her aunt Kirreth whose name was as peculiar as she was. She could do anything, couldn't she? If she could defeat fae and the creeping things in the dark, she would get through this as well. Whatever it was.

Circle Daybreak.

It sounded ominous but, she was quite sure that in order to grow up most people had to go through ominous things. Her's just happened to be magic.

And dead people.

Lots of dead people.

She shouldn't have really been surprised at how many ghosts were in London. It was an old city after all but that didn't mean that it wasn't a little bit of a shock now and again. Mostly now. Lirael looked down at the small cell phone in her hand and frowned at it. Magic and technology were never a good combination but she dutifully pressed all the right numbers and held the phone up to her ear.

"My name is Lirael, I was told to dial this number and say that I've landed at Heathrow. I suppose I'll need a lift, if that's not too much trouble."
